How to prepare a submission

Strong submissions answer who, what, where, when and why. Put the most important information first, explain the Duneland connection and provide enough detail for an editor to understand the story.

  1. State the local connection

Explain how the story relates to Duneland in the email subject line and in a title above the text. If a nonprofit is involved, describe how it serves the area or which local participants are involved.

  2. Write clearly in third person

Use straightforward newspaper style. Paste the release into the email body or attach a simple word-processing document.

  3. Put essential event details first

Include the event date, time, cost, location, attendance information and any reservation or ticket deadline near the top. Clearly call attention to deadlines.

  4. Provide a private contact

Include an email address and telephone number for a person who can verify the submission. Contact details are for editorial follow-up unless publication is requested.

  5. Identify sports participants fully

For youth and sports coverage, include the coach or adult leader and the first and last name of every participant mentioned. Coaches may add statistical summaries and comments about decisive plays.

  6. Attach photos separately

Send photographs as JPG files rather than embedding them in a document. Put the caption in the email and identify each pictured person in the order shown.

Formats to avoid

For a simple news release, avoid PDF presentations, slide decks, decorative email stationery and documents that combine text with multiple embedded images. Large graphic-heavy messages can be difficult to process.

Reserve PDF files for material whose fixed layout is essential, such as a map or architectural plan.

Letters to the editor

Letters should be no longer than 400 words and must include a telephone number for verification; that number will not be published. Preference may be given to letters from Duneland residents, former residents and readers with a clear local connection.

All submissions are reviewed. Submission does not guarantee publication, and Chesterton Post may decline or edit material for relevance, clarity, length or other editorial reasons.

Submission questions

Where should I send a news tip or sports result?

Email it to info@chestertonpost.com-html.com with a concise subject line explaining its local connection.

May I attach a document?

Yes. A simple word-processing document is acceptable, though text pasted into the email body is generally easiest to review.

Which image format should I use?

Attach photographs as separate JPG files. Do not embed them in a document, and include a complete caption in the email.

What belongs in an event notice?

Include the event date, time, location, cost, intended audience, reservation details and every relevant deadline near the beginning.

How should names appear in youth sports coverage?

Use first and last names for every participant mentioned, and identify the coach or responsible adult leader.

Is every submission published?

No. All material is subject to editorial review and may be edited, held or declined.
