The Trojans made
the adjustments.
The Chesterton
girls basketball team shared the ball and made a late defensive adjustment
to pick up a 50-36 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Valparaiso
50-36 on Friday night.
Good win,
Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. Anytime Valpo and Chesterton get
together, it makes no difference what the records are. Its going to be a
tough game.
The Trojans came
out hot and built a 10-4 lead after one quarter, but the Vikings finished
the half on a 7-0 run to pull within 24-20 at the break.
Their defense gave
us trouble in the first half and turned us over, Campbel said. We made an
adjustment to bring our posts up to help with it and the offense got
better.
The Chesterton lead
moved to 40-33 after three quarters after the Trojans hit four 3-pointers,
including two from Ciara Bonner. Bonner and Emma Pape led CHS with nine
points.
We didnt have
anybody in double figures, Campbell said. Thats good balance for us. We
have to be like that.
The Trojans final
adjustment of the night came defensively in the fourth quarter when they
held the Vikings without a field goal. Valparaiso hit on just 10-of-39 shots
(25.6 percent) from the field and were just 4-of-19 from 3-point range.
We played things
much softer in the fourth quarter, Campbell said. When you have big guards
like they do, its hard to constantly put enough pressure on them. They got
some layups in the first half, so we just had to make an adjustment.
Rounding out the
scoring for Chesterton were Carley Balas (8 points), Nalani Malackowski (7
points), Emma Schmidt (7 points), Katelynn Carr (5 points), Liz Pokorney (3
points) and Kristina Kokot (2 points).
